The Frog & The Scorpion: A Fable that Stings

A lone scorpion was travelling across the land when he came upon a river.  Seeing a Frog in the bulrushes nearby by, he  called out: “Hey you!  Frog!   I need to get across this river.  Let me jump on your back and you can carry me across it.”

The Frog fervently shook her head: “Not a CHANCE. You’re a Scorpion! As soon as we get there, you’ll sting me and kill me!”

“Ah, dearest Frog, that’s simply not true… For your act of great kindness, I assure you I won’t kill or harm you in any way.”

The Frog wasn’t convinced.  “How do I know you won’t decide to sting me when we are close to shore?”

“Because it’s not in my best interest,” answered the Scorpion.  “I despise the water, plus I can’t swim.  I would die too.  I assure you I only wish to continue on with my travels.”

The Frog paused for a moment in thought: The Scorpion seemed very sincere; and it was the ‘right’ thing to do.  “Okay.  Climb on my back.”   And off the duo went into the river.

They were just past the midway point, when the Frog felt the searing pain of Scorpion’s stinger in her neck.  “Why did you do that?” she shrieked.  “You said you wouldn’t harm me; you said it wasn’t in your best interest.  Now we’re both going to die out here!”

“I couldn’t help it,” responded the Scorpion.  “It’s just part of my nature.”

Do you have a Scorpion in your life?  Do you put yourself at risk by trusting when you shouldn’t?  Sadly, some people’s true natures are revealed as they navigate divorce…
